In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
"Alif. Lam. Mim. (1) This is the Scripture whereof there is no doubt, a guidance unto those who are pious and righteous. (2) Who believe in the Unseen, and establish worship, and spend of that We have bestowed upon them; (3) And who believe in that which is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) and that which was revealed before thee, and are certain of the Hereafter. (4) These depend on guidance from their Lord. These are the successful. (5): [Quran 2: 1-5]
AND IF YOU ARE IN DOUBT CONCERNING THAT WHICH WE HAVE REVEALED
And if you (Arab pagans, Jews, and Christians) are in doubt concerning that which We have sent down (i.e. the Qur'ân) to Our slave (Muhammad Peace be upon him ), then produce a Sûrah (chapter) of the like thereof and call your witnesses (supporters and helpers) besides Allâh, if you are truthful. (23) But if you do it not, and you can never do it, then fear the Fire (Hell) whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers. (24). [Quran 2: 23 -24]
WHAT IS THE QURAN:
The Quran is the holy book for Muslims, revealed in stages to the Prophet Muhammad over 23 years. Quranic revelations are regarded by Muslims as the sacred word of God, intended to correct any errors in previous holy books. It contains the following main categories:
1. The oneness of Allah and his beautiful names and descriptions.
2. Allah's legislation regarding different aspects of person's life
3. Stories of previous nations and how Allah sent them the prophets and messengers to call them to the oneness of God (Allah). What were people's responses, etc.
4. Allah's orders, including but not limited to, prayer, fasting, charity, pilgrimage to Mecca. How these worship actions would be implemented in Muslim life, etc.
A picture of the Holy Quran in its Arabic Language
Those (who embraced Islâm from Banî Israel) to whom We gave the Book [the Taurât (Torah)] [or those (Muhammad's Peace be upon him companions) to whom We have given the Book (the Qur'ân)] recite it (i.e. obey its orders and follow its teachings) as it should be recited (i.e. followed), they are the ones that believe therein. And whoso disbelieves in it (the Qur'ân), those are they who are the losers. (Tafsir Al-Qurtubî.) [Quran 2: 121]
The month of Ramadân in which was revealed the Qur'ân, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadân i.e. is present at his home), he must observe Saum (fasts) that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Saum (fasts) must be made up] from other days. Allâh intends for you ease, and He does not want to make things difficult for you. (He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allâh [i.e. to say Takbîr (Allâhu-Akbar; Allâh is the Most Great) for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him.[Quran 2: 185]
It is He Who has sent down the Book (the Qur'ân) to you (Muhammad SAW) with truth, confirming what came before it. And he sent down the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) (3) Aforetime, as a guidance to mankind, And He sent down the criterion [of judgement between right and wrong (this Qur'ân)]. Truly, those who disbelieve in the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, for them there is a severe torment; and Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Able of Retribution. [Quran 3: 3-4]
It is He Who has sent down to you (Muhammad SAW) the Book (this Qur'ân). In it are Verses that are entirely clear, they are the foundations of the Book [and those are the Verses of Al-Ahkâm (commandments), Al-Farâ'id (obligatory duties) and Al-Hudud (legal laws for the punishment of thieves, adulterers)]; and others not entirely clear. So as for those in whose hearts there is a deviation (from the truth) they follow that which is not entirely clear thereof, seeking Al-Fitnah (polytheism and trials), and seeking for its hidden meanings, but none knows its hidden meanings save Allâh. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in it; the whole of it (clear and unclear Verses) are from our Lord." And none receive admonition except men of understanding. (Tafsir At-Tabarî). [Quran 3: 7]
Do they not then consider the Qur'ân carefully? Had it been from other than Allâh, they would surely have found therein many contradictions. [Quran 4: 82]
Surely, We have sent down to you (O Muhammad SAW) the Book (this Qur'ân) in truth that you might judge between men by that which Allâh has shown you (i.e. has taught you through Divine Revelation), so be not a pleader for the treacherous. [Quran 4: 105)]
Had not the Grace of Allâh and His Mercy been upon you (O Muhammad SAW), a party of them would certainly have made a decision to mislead you, but (in fact) they mislead none except their own selves, and no harm can they do to you in the least. Allâh has sent down to you the Book (The Qur'ân), and Al¬Hikmah (Islâmic laws, knowledge of legal and illegal things i.e. the Prophet's Sunnah - legal ways), and taught you that which you knew not. And Ever Great is the Grace of Allâh unto you (O Muhammad SAW). [Quran 4: 113)]
O you who believe! Believe in Allâh, and His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), and the Book (the Qur'ân) which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down to those before (him), and whosoever disbelieves in Allâh, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then indeed he has strayed far away[Quran 4: 136)]
And this (the Qur'ân) is a blessed Book which We have sent down, confirming (the revelations) which came before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Towns (i.e. Makkah) and all those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it (the Qur'ân), and they are constant in guarding their Salât (prayers).[Quran 6: 92]
And this is a blessed Book (the Qur'ân) which We have sent down, so follow it and fear Allâh (i.e. do not disobey His Orders), that you may receive mercy (i.e. be saved from the torment of Hell). (155) Lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: "The Book was sent down only to two sects before us (the Jews and the Christians), and for our part, we were in fact unaware of what they studied." (156) Or lest you (pagan Arabs) should say: "If only the Book had been sent down to us, we would surely have been better guided than they (Jews and Christians)." So now has come unto you a clear proof (the Qur'ân) from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy. Who then does more wrong than one who rejects the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh and turns away therefrom? We shall requite those who turn away from Our Ayât with an evil torment, because of their turning away (from them). [Tafsir At-Tabari]. (157) Do they then wait for anything other than that the angels should come to them, or that your Lord (Allah) should come, or that some of the Signs of your Lord should come (i.e. portents of the Hour e.g., arising of the sun from the west)! The day that some of the Signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do to a person to believe then, if he believed not before, nor earned good (by performing deeds of righteousness) through his Faith. Say: "Wait you! we (too) are waiting."[Quran 6: 158]
HAlif-Lâm-Mîm-Sâd. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'ân and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings]. (1) (This is the) Book (the Qur'ân) sent down unto you (O Muhammad SAW), so let not your breast be narrow therefrom, that you warn thereby, and a reminder unto the believers. (2). [Quran 7: 1-2]
Certainly, We have brought them a Book (the Qur'ân) which We have explained in detail with knowledge, - a guidance and a mercy to a people who believe. (52) Await they just for the final fullfilment of the event? On the Day the event is finally fulfilled (i.e. the Day of Resurrection), those who neglected it before will say: "Verily, the Messengers of our Lord did come with the truth, now are there any intercessors for us that they might intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back (to the first life of the world) so that we might do (good) deeds other than those (evil) deeds which we used to do?" Verily, they have lost their ownselves (i.e. destroyed themselves) and that which they used to fabricate (invoking and worshipping others besides Allâh) has gone away from them. (53). [Quran 7: 52 -53]
WHEN THE QURAN IS RECITED
So, when the Qur'ân is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy. [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imâm (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Sûrat Al-Fâtihah), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. [Quran 7: 204]
And when Our Clear Verses are recited unto them, those who hope not for their meeting with Us, say: Bring us a Qur'ân other than this, or change it."Say (O Muhammad SAW): "It is not for me to change it on my own accord; I only follow that which is revealed unto me. Verily, I fear the torment of the Great Day (i.e. the Day of Resurrection). if I were to disobey my Lord." (15) Say (O Muhammad SAW): "If Allâh had so willed, I should not have recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. Verily, I have stayed amongst you a life time before this. Have you then no sense?" (16) So who does more wrong than he who forges a lie against Allâh or denies His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.)? Surely, the Mujrimûn (criminals, sinners, disbelievers and polytheists) will never be successful! (17). [Quran 10: 15 -17]
And this Qur'ân is not such as could ever be produced by other than Allâh (Lord of the heavens and the earth), but it is a confirmation of (the revelation)[] which was before it [i.e. the Taurât (Torah), and the Injeel (Gospel)], and a full explanation of the Book (i.e. laws decreed for mankind) - wherein there is no doubt from the the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn, and all that exists). (37) Or do they say: "He (Muhammad SAW) has forged it?" Say: "Bring then a Sûrah (chapter) like unto it, and call upon whomsoever you can, besides Allâh, if you are truthful!" (38) Nay, they have belied; the knowledge whereof they could not comprehend and what has not yet been fulfilled (i.e. their punishment). Thus those before them did belie. Then see what was the end of the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers)! (39). [Quran 10: 37 -39]
Or they say, "He (Prophet Muhammad SAW) forged it (the Qur'an)." Say: "Bring you then ten forged Sûrahs (chapters) like unto it, and call whomsoever you can, other than Allâh (to your help), if you speak the truth!" (13) If then they answer you not, know then that it [the Revelation (this Qur'ân)] is sent down with the Knowledge of Allâh and that Lâ ilâha illa Huwa: (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! Will you then be Muslims (those who submit to Islâm)? (14). [Quran 11: 13-14
Alif-Lâm-Râ. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an, and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Clear Book (the Qur'ân that makes clear the legal and illegal things, laws, a guidance and a blessing). (1) Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'ân in order that you may understand. (2) We relate unto you (Muhammad SAW) the best of stories through Our Revelations unto you, of this Qur'ân. And before this (i.e. before the coming of Divine Revelation to you), you were among those who knew nothing about it (the Qur'ân) (3). [Quran 12: 1 - 3]
And if there had been a Qur'ân with which mountains could be moved (from their places), or the earth could be cloven asunder, or the dead could be made to speak (it would not have been other than this Qur'ân). But the decision of all things is certainly with Allâh. Have not then those who believed yet known that had Allâh willed, He could have guided all mankind? And a disaster will not cease to strike those who disbelieve because of their (evil) deeds or it (i.e. the disaster) settle close to their homes, until the Promise of Allâh comes to pass. Certainly, Allâh does not fail in His Promise. [Quran 13: 31 ]
And thus have We sent it (the Qur'ân) down to be a judgement of authority in Arabic. Were you (O Muhammad SAW) to follow their (vain) desires after the knowledge which has come to you, then you will not have any Walî (protector) or Waq (defender) against Allâh. [Quran 13: 37]
Alif-Lâm-Râ. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'ân, and none but Allâh (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Qur'ân. [Quran 15: 1]
Verily We: It is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur'ân) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption). [Quran 15: 9]
And indeed, We have bestowed upon you seven of Al-Mathâni (the seven repeatedly recited Verses), (i.e. Sûrat Al-Fâtihah) and the Grand Qur'ân. [Quran 15: 87]
As We have sent down on the dividers, (Quraish pagans or Jews and Christians). (90) Who have made the Qur'ân into parts. (i.e. believed in one part and disbelieved in the other). (Tafsir At-Tabari) (91) So, by your Lord (O Muhammad SAW), We shall certainly call all of them to account. (92) For all that they used to do. (93). [Quran 15: 90 - 93]
And We have not sent down the Book (the Qur'an) to you (O Muhammad SAW), except that you may explain clearly unto them those things in which they differ, and (as) a guidance and a mercy for a folk who believe. [Quran 16: 64]
And (remember) the Day when We shall raise up from every nation a witness against them from amongst themselves. And We shall bring you (O Muhammad SAW) as a witness against these. And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur'an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allâh as Muslims). [Quran 16: 89]
So when you want to recite the Qur'ân, seek refuge with Allâh from Shaitân (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one). [Quran 16: 98]
Verily, this Qur'ân guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allâh and His Messenger, Muhammad SAW). who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise). [Quran 17: 9]
And surely, We have explained [Our Promises, Warnings and (set forth many) examples] in this Qur'ân that they (the disbelievers) may take heed, but it increases them in naught save aversion. [Quran 17: 41]
And when you (Muhammad SAW) recite the Qur'ân, We put between you and those who believe not in the Hereafter, an invisible veil[] (or screen their hearts, so they hear or understand it not). (45) And We have put coverings over their hearts lest, they should understand it (the Qur'ân), and in their ears deafness. And when you make mention of your Lord Alone [Lâ ilâha ill-allâh (none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh) Islâmic Monotheism (A.S.)] in the Qur'ân, they turn on their backs, fleeing in extreme disliken. [Quran 17: 45 - 46]
Perform As¬Salât (Iqamât-as-Salât)[] from mid-day till the darkness of the night (i.e. the Zuhr, 'Asr, Maghrib, and 'Ishâ' prayers), and recite the Qur'ân in the early dawn (i.e. the morning prayer). Verily, the recitation of the Qur'ân in the early dawn is ever witnessed (attended by the angels in charge of mankind of the day and the night)[]. (78) And in some parts of the night (also) offer the Salât (prayer) with it (i.e. recite the Qur'an in the prayer), as an additional prayer (Tahajjud optional prayer - Nawâfil) for you (O Muhammad SAW). It may be that your Lord will raise you to Maqâm Mahmûd (a station of praise and glory, i.e. the honour of intercession on the Day of Resurrection). [Quran 17: 78 - 79]
And We send down of the Qur'ân that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islâmic Monotheism and act on it), and it increases the Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers) nothing but loss. [Quran 17: 82]
Say: "If the mankind and the jinn were together to produce the like of this Qur'ân, they could not produce the like thereof, even if they helped one another." (88) And indeed We have fully explained to mankind, in this Qur'ân, every kind of similitude, but most of mankind refuse (the truth and accept nothing) but disbelief. [Quran 17: 88 - 89]
AND WITH THE TRUTH WE HAVE SENT IT DOWN, AND WITH THE TRUTH IT HAS DESCENDED
And with truth We have sent it down (i.e. the Qur'ân), and with truth it has descended. And We have sent you (O Muhammad SAW) as nothing but a bearer of glad tidings (of Paradise, for those who follow your Message of Islâmic Monotheism), and a warner (of Hell-fire for those who refuse to follow your Message of Islâmic Monotheism)[] (105) And (it is) a Qur'ân which We have divided (into parts), in order that you might recite it to men at intervals. And We have revealed it by stages. (in 23 years) (106)
And recite what has been revealed to you (O Muhammad SAW) of the Book (the Qur'ân) of your Lord (i.e. recite it, understand and follow its teachings and act on its orders and preach it to men). None can change His Words, and none will you find as a refuge other than Him. [Quran 18: 27]
And indeed We have put forth every kind of example in this Qur'ân, for mankind. But, man is ever more quarrelsome than anything. (
[Quran 18: 54]
Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind). "If the sea were ink for (writing) the Words of my Lord, surely, the sea would be exhausted before the Words of my Lord would be finished, even if we brought (another sea) like it for its aid." (109) Say (O Muhammad SAW): "I am only a man like you. It has been revealed to me that your Ilâh (God) is One Ilâh (God — i.e. Allâh). So whoever hopes for the Meeting[] with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord." [Quran 18: 109 -110]
We have not sent down the Qur'ân unto you (O Muhammad SAW) to cause you distress, (2) But only as a Reminder to those who fear (Allâh). (3) A revelation from Him (Allâh) Who has created the earth and high heavens. [Quran 20: 2 - 4]
And thus We have sent it down as a Qur'ân in Arabic, and have explained therein in detail the warnings, in order that they may fear Allâh, or that it may cause them to have a lesson from it (or to have the honour for believing and acting on its teachings). (113) Then High above all be Allâh, the True King. And be not in haste (O Muhammad SAW) with the Qur'ân before its revelation is completed to you, and say: "My Lord! Increase me in knowledge." [Quran 20: 113 -114]
And indeed We have sent down for you Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) that make things plain, and the example of those who passed away before you, and an admonition for those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious and righteous persons - see V.2:2). [Quran 24: 34]
Blessed is He Who sent down the criterion (of right and wrong, i.e. this Qur'ân) to His slave (Muhammad SAW) that he may be a warner to the 'Alamîn (mankind and jinn). (1) He to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Who has begotten no son (children or offspring) and for Whom there is no partner in the dominion. He has created everything, and has measured it exactly according to its due measurements (2) Yet they have taken besides Him other âlihâh (gods) that created nothing but are themselves created, and possess neither hurt nor benefit for themselves, and possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor of raising the dead. (3) Those who disbelieve say: "This (the Qurân) is nothing but a lie that he (Muhammad SAW) has invented, and others have helped him at it, in fact they have produced an unjust wrong (thing) and a lie." (4) And they say: "Tales of the ancients, which he has written down, and they are dictated to him morning and afternoon." (5) Say: "It (this Qur'ân) has been sent down by Him (Allâh) (the Real Lord of the heavens and earth) Who knows the secret of the heavens and the earth. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." (6) . [Quran 25: 1 - 6]
And those who disbelieve say: "Why is not the Qur'ân revealed to him all at once?" Thus (it is sent down in parts), that We may strengthen your heart thereby. And We have revealed it to you gradually, in stages. (It was revealed to the Prophet SAW in 23 years.). [Quran 25: 32]
And indeed We have distributed it (rain or water) amongst them in order that they may remember (the Grace of Allâh), but most men (refuse to accept the Truth or Faith and) accept nothing but disbelief or ingratitude. (50) And had We willed, We would have raised a warner in every town. (51) So obey not the disbelievers, but strive against them (by preaching) with the utmost endeavour, with it (the Qur'ân). (52). [Quran 25: 50 - 52]
And truly, this (the Qur'ân) is a revelation from the Lord of the 'Alamîn (mankind, jinn and all that exists), (192) Which the trustworthy Rûh [Jibril (Gabriel)] has brought down; (193) Upon your heart (O Muhammad SAW) that you may be (one) of the warners, (194) In the plain Arabic language. (195) And verily, it (the Qur'ân, and its revelation to Prophet Muhammad SAW) is (announced) in the Scriptures [i.e. the Taurât (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] of former people. (196) Is it not a sign to them that the learned scholars (like 'Abdullâh bin Salâm radhiallahu'anhu who embraced Islâm)[] of the Children of Israel knew it (as true)? (197) And if We had revealed it (this Qur'ân) unto any of the non-Arabs, (198) And he had recited it unto them, they would not have believed in it. (199) Thus have We caused it (the denial of the Qur'ân) to enter the hearts of the Mûjrimûn (criminals, polytheists, sinners). (200) They will not believe in it until they see the painful torment, (201) It shall come to them of a sudden, while they perceive it not. (202) Then they will say: "Can we be respited?" (203) Would they then wish for Our Torment to be hastened on? (204) Tell Me, (even) if We do let them enjoy for years, (205) And afterwards comes to them that (punishment) which they had been promised! (206) All that with which they used to enjoy shall not avail them. (207) And never did We destroy a township, but it had its warners (208) By way of reminder, and We have never been unjust. (209) And it is not the Shayâtin (devils) who have brought it (this Qur'ân) down, (210) Neither would it suit them, nor they can (produce it). (211) Verily, they have been removed far from hearing it. (212). [Quran 26: 192 - 212]
Ta Sin, These are the Verses of the Qur'ân, and (it is) a Book (that makes things) clear; (1) A guide (to the Right Path); and glad tidings for the believers [who believe in the Oneness of Allâh (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism)]. (2) Those who perform As¬Salât (Iqâmat¬as¬Salât) and give Zakât and they believe with certainty in the Hereafter (resurrection, recompense of their good and bad deeds, Paradise and Hell). (3)Verily, those who believe not in the Hereafter, We have made their deeds fair-seeming to them, so that they wander about blindly (4) They are those for whom there will be an evil torment (in this world). And in the Hereafter they will be the greatest losers. (5) And verily, you (O Muhammad SAW) are being taught the Qur'ân from the One, All-Wise, All-Knowing. (6) . [Quran 27: 1 - 6]
Verily, this Qur'ân narrates to the Children of Israel most of that in which they differ. (76) And truly, it (this Qur'ân) is a guide and a mercy for the believers. (77) Verily, your Lord will decide between them (various sects) by His Judgement. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing. (78) So put your trust in Allâh; surely, you (O Muhammad SAW) are on manifest truth. (79). [Quran 27: 76 - 79]
AND THAT I SHOULD RECITE THE QURAN
I (Muhammad SAW) have been commanded only to worship the Lord of this city (Makkah), Who has sanctified it and to whom belongs everything. And I am commanded to be from among the Muslims (those who submit to Allâh in Islâm)[] (91) And that I should recite the Qur'ân, then whosoever receives guidance, receives it for the good of his ownself, and whosoever goes astray, say (to him): "I am only one of the warners." (92). [Quran 27: 91 - 92]
