The religion of Islam considered severity of infectious diseases more than 1400 years ago. There are many guidelines that prophet Mohammad peace be upon him told us about that are very important to consider and to implement. In this page, you will have the opportunity to know them and learn important supplications.
Prophet Mohammad, peace be upon him, referred to purity as half of faith. Purity is half of faith, and the praise of Allah fills the scale (Sahih Muslim). Similarly, the Quran states: Truly, God loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (Quran 2:222). While this purity involves a spiritual aspect, it also includes physical cleanliness.
Muslims are required to pray 5 daily prayers and before each prayer there is one condition, which is to perform Wudu or ablution. This consists as a minimum of washing the face, the hands to the elbows, wiping the head and washing the feet to the ankle. Additionally, there is additional wudu actions recommend by the prophet including washing the face 3 times, the hands to the elbow 3 times, wiping the head and the ears, and washing the feet to the ankle 3 times. If a person prays the five daily prayers regularly there cleanness level would always be maintained at high level, and would eventually be protected from infectious diseases.
Prophet Mohammad peace be upon him said: "... if a person in the time of an epidemic stays in their home patiently hoping for Allah's reward and believing that nothing will afflict them except what Allah has written for them, they will get the reward of a martyr.
(Musnad Ahmad 26139, Sahih AlBukhari 3474 and the wording of Bukari is: "stays in their land.")
The Prophet, peace be upon him, instructed Muslims to cover their faces when sneezing. Although it may seem obvious to us today, but he taught Muslims to do this before there was an understanding of how airborne diseases spread.
Prophet Muhammad advised quarantining to contain a deadly outbreak. He said: “If you hear of an outbreak of plague in a land, do not enter it; if the plague breaks out in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place.”
Anas ibn Malik reported that prophet Mohammad peace be upon him would make the following duaa': “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from leprosy, madness and evil diseases”
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْبَرَصِ، وَالْجُنُونِ، وَالْجُذَامِ، وَمِنْ سَيِّئِ الأَسْقَامِ
